The following is a profile of Dr. Roy L.Austin who was honored by The Friends of St. Vincent and the Grenadines for the Promotion of Secondary Education, (FSVGS, Inc.) on Sunday, April 20, 2001 at the 10th Anniversary Celebration of FSVGS.

Roy L. Austin an Associate Professor of Sociology Justice and Africa American Studies, at The Pennsylvania State University.

SECONDARY SCHOOL
   St. Vincent Grammar School, 1953-59.
Academic: School Certificate, 1957; Higher School Certificate, 1959 (Cambridge).
Athletic:  Represented the school in basketball, cricket, football, and track and field.
   Member of the Inter-schools Tournament team that visited Dominica in 1958.  Top-scorer in             Cricket against Grenada.  Scored three of four goals to help SVG win the football championship.     A member of the football team that won the SVG knockout cup for clubs.  Three first prizes in         swimming and diving in the lower age-group in the second of two meets in the 1950's.

Other Extracurricular:  Head prefect.  Company sergeant-major in the Cadet Corps.
    Member of the debating society.  Editor of the newsletter "The News and Views,"

POST SECONDARY, ST. VINCENT
Employment: Customs Officer, 1959-61.  Staff member, ST. VGS, 1961-64 (also, first male to            teach classes at the Girls High School, 1962-64)
Athletic: Member of national teams in football, basketball and weightlifting,(captain, 1962-64                football) and Second vice-president SVG Football Association.
Cultural:  President Eagles Club (Inception through reorganization in 1960 to 1964).  Also,                 designed and painted crests for the "Best Dressed" Eagles netball team.  A Bridge Boys                carnival bandleader (1961-1964) for "Peoples of Palestine," "Barbaric Splendour")  1st prize,            Fancy), "Ancient Egypt" (1963 Band of the Year), and "From the Story of Western Colonization."

TERTIARY EDUCATION
Undergraduate:  Yale University, 1964-68.  B.A. In Sociology
   Freshman and varsity soccer, 1964-67 (Captain 1967)
Graduate:  University of Washington, 1968 -72.  M.A. (1970), Ph.D (1973) in Sociology,                     International Soccer Club Player,  President, Caribbean Students Association.  Played                   triple-cello pans in the "Tropical Rainstorm" steelband comprised primary of Caribbean students.

POST-TERTIARY
Employment:  The Pennsylvania State University, Sociology Department faculty Member, 1972 -         present Director, Crime, Law and Justice Program, 1994-94
Publications:  Cover issues in family, race/ethnicity, crime, criminal justice, sports and calypso in     cross-national and various national or regional settings.
